As educators, we are constantly striving to ensure what we are teaching our learners is preparing them for the real world. How do you measure how the course design equates to what the student is learning and how they are able to show mastery of those concepts in a concrete manner? Competency-based assessment is one viable solution.
In working with Competency-Based Education (CBE) curriculum design, our team focuses on the mastery of the job-specific, skill-specific, or certificate-specific curriculum rather than thinking more abstractly. Each module is finely tuned to help the learner demonstrate what they already know and provides direction for what skills they need to develop. CBE offers content to increase knowledge and then assesses learning to ensure skills can be applied.

The primary goal of any CBE course we develop is to ensure we aren’t just “teaching to a test”, but working to demonstrate that the learner will have the skills necessary to accomplish their goals in the real world. This is achieved through multiple assessment strategies that mirror real-world knowledge.

To illustrate this alignment, The Babb Group can complete a content map for each course as dictated by each outcome. Any required components will be included in terms of assessments, rubrics, and/or any other required materials to show alignment and achievement.
